Health food abounds at fruit vendors' stalls along the streets of Tana. Strung on the wires are ripe bananas; don't let the dark spots fool you into thinking they're overripe. They're not picked a week ahead while still green and unripe like at home. Lychee 'nuts' are in the baskets the lady is tending - they're in season mainly in December. Papayas, mangos and highland nectarines are also in view. The piles of white material are various grades of rice, sold by the kilo.
